Champion Stats
Low elo players pick for themselves, not for the team. This means they often draft amazing ultimates (Malphite, Amumu, Leona, MF) without realizing you can steal them. Furthermore, Sylas has an insane early game—his passive and W sustain let you win extended trades that enemies don't expect. You can 1v2 ganks if played correctly because of your healing and damage output.
The Stolen Ult
Start Q. Auto-attack the enemy laner once at level 1. Your passive 'Petricite Burst' activates, giving you three empowered auto-attacks (one after each spell). Q-Auto-Auto-Auto. This combo does unexpected damage and procs Electrocute. Most mages respect 'assassin' level 1s, not 'bruiser' level 1s. Surprise them.
Don't just steal the first R you see. Wait for the Malphite, the Orianna, or the Alistar. Your R scaling is better than theirs in many cases. You are the thief of fate—choose wisely.
Which Sylas Skin to Use
'Freljord Sylas' has the cleanest animations and chainwhip sound effects. 'Project Sylas' has a slightly faster-looking E animation. 'Lunar Wraith' is beautiful but the chains can be visually confusing in teamfights. Avoid 'Withered Rose' if you want competitive clarity.
'Freljord' is the cleanest. 'Project' for the futuristic jank. 'Lunar Wraith' for the colors. 'Prestige' for the gold chains. Sylas is the king of the mid-lane—act like it.
'Freljord Sylas' is the cleanest. 'Project' is clunky but cool. 'Lunar Wraith' is pretty. Freljord feels the smoothest for combos.
When They Ban Sylas
Akali dashes. Ekko rewinds. Galio taunts. Akali is the mechanical outplay alternative.
Akali for the mobility. Ekko for the burst/safety. Galio for the anti-mage. Akali is the mechanical assassin alternative.
Optimal Runes for Sylas
Electrocute for burst. Conqueror for extended fights against bruisers top lane. First Strike is niche but effective if you can reliably trade without taking damage first. Sudden Impact is mandatory—it procs on your E2 dash. Secondary Precision (Presence of Mind + Coup de Grace) ensures you have mana and execute damage.
Sylas's Ability Priority
Max Q first for waveclear and poke (double Q detonation). Max W second for healing—this is your sustain in lane and teamfights. Max E last because you're leveling it for the cooldown, not the damage.
Mastering Sylas's Kit
Chain Lash throws chains that intersect. If both chains hit the same point (they converge), it EXPLODES for bonus damage. Always aim for the convergence point on the enemy. In lane, use it to push waves (hit all 6 minions with the explosion).
Kingslayer heals you and deals bonus damage to low HP targets. This is your execute AND your sustain. Use it at the last moment (when you're low HP) for maximum healing value. It heals more the lower YOU are.
Sylas's Lane Opponents
Skill Matchup. Steal his R and use it when he ults you—you'll both pop at the same time, but you have W healing to survive.
Easy Lane. She's immobile. E in, combo her, W heal through her damage. Her ult is mediocre to steal but usable.
Hard Counter. He outscales you massively, and his passive gives him magic damage reduction. Kill him early or lose.
Zed R is great to steal. Twist of fate. If he ults, you ult. Who wins? The one who hits W last.
Wrong Ult Steal
Stop using E1 to engage from max range. You only have one dash (E2) after hitting E1, and if that gets interrupted, you're stranded. Walk up, throw E1 at medium range, guarantee the E2 connection, THEN combo. Also, stop stealing useless ultimates. Udyr R is not worth using.
If you steal a bad ult, just use it to proc your passive. Don't hold onto a useless Nidalee R when you could have a game-changing Amumu R. Efficiency in theft is the mark of a master. Be smart.
When They Outrange You
Dodge if the enemy team has only bad ultimates to steal (Udyr, Vayne, Illaoi). Also dodge into Cassiopeia—her Grounding stops your E2, and she just kills you with DPS. Anivia is also rough; you can't steal a useful ult from her, and her wall blocks your E2.
Cassiopeia Miama. Taliyah rocks. Vex fear. Cassiopeia ground makes you a minion. Don't pick into her.
Dodge Cassiopeia/Taliyah. Grounded stops your E. You can't move. You die. Also dodge if the enemy team has useless ults (Jayce/Nidalee/Illaoi).
The Backline Artillery
Flank. You are not the engage. Wait for your team to start the fight, then E in from the side, steal the most impactful ultimate (Amumu, Orianna, Malphite), and cast it for your team. Use W on the biggest threat to sustain. Your Q does massive AoE if you land both explosions.
Steal Malphite R. Flank. Go in. Steal Ashe arrow. Snipe. You are the enemy team's best champion. Use their tools against them.
Steal a big ult (Malphite/Amumu). Flank. E in. Unleash their own weapon against them. Then W to heal back to full. You are their worst nightmare.
The AP Bruiser Build
Hextech Rocketbelt into Lich Bane. The burst is hilarious. Rocketbelt-E-Auto-Q-W-Ignite one-shots squishies. No counterplay. Add Shadowflame for maximum AP burst.
Lich Bane is mandatory. Your passive autos deal massive damage after every spell. Q-auto-W-auto-E-auto-R. That's 4 empowered hits. They won't survive.
Lich Bane -> Zhonya's -> Shadowflame. Weaver of magic. Bop them with passive autos between spells. BIG yellow numbers.
Timing Sylas's All-Ins
Level 3, when you have access to Q, W, and E. Your trade pattern (E-Q-Auto-W) is almost impossible to lose. Level 6, you gain ultimate-stealing access. Two-item spike (Everfrost or Rocketbelt + Zhonya's) is your strongest point—you have burst, CC, and survivability.
Level 3 E-E-W-Q/Auto. It deletes 60% HP. If they stay, kill them next rotation. W heals more when you act lower HP. Bait them.
Level 3 Trade. Level 6 Steal. 2-Item Spike. You are strongest when you have a good ult to steal. Play around enemy cooldowns.
The Hijacked Ultimate
Steal their most satisfying ultimate and use it against them. Taking Malphite R and using it on his own ADC is psychological warfare. Type 'thx for ult' in all chat. They will focus you, which creates space for your team.
Using an enemy's ultimate to kill them is the ultimate psychological warfare. Type '?' after they die to their own move. You are the chaotic variable in every draft. Embrace the madness.
Stealing Ashe arrow and cross-mapping her. Stealing Malphite R and hitting a 5-man knockup. Type 'Our ult' in chat. Comimunism prevails.
