Champion Stats
Low elo teams LOVE to clump up. They will stand on top of each other while fighting for a dragon or pushing a tower, which is an open invitation for Amumu to Flash-R and end the game. They also consistently fail to respect the range and low cooldown of his Q (Bandage Toss), assuming they are safe after he misses once, not realizing he has a second charge ready to go.
The Bandage Toss
Start W (Despair) for a healthy clear or Q (Bandage Toss) if your team is invading. A level 1 Amumu Q in the enemy jungle is almost always a guaranteed Flash or First Blood. If you are playing AP Amumu, a level 2 gank with Q and E can easily kill any immobile mid-laner who hasn't warded or reached their mobility spell yet.
Q can be used on jungle camps to escape over walls. If you get caught, don't panic. Search for the nearest Gromp or Krugs, Q them, and disappear. It's the only way a mummy can be elusive.
Ranking Amumu's Skins
'Surprise Party Amumu' is the ultimate BM skin—the 'happy birthday' sound on the R is purely psychological warfare. 'Infernal Amumu' looks amazing and has very clear visual indicators. 'Emumu' is a classic flex for OG players. Avoid 'Vancouver Amumu' or 'Pharaoh Amumu' as they are basically just recolors and don't offer the visual depth of his modern skins.
'Surprise Party' is mandatory for the 'Happy Birthday' R sound. It perfectly mocks the enemy team while you're winning. 'Infernal' is the best for competitive clear—the fire particles on W make it very easy to track your own damage ticks against jungle camps.
When They Ban Amumu
Sejuani and Zac are the big-engage brothers. They fill the same 'jump in and CC everyone' role. If you go Malphite, remember your early ganks are nonexistent compared to Amumu. Play for the level 6 map flip.
Sejuani offers similar tanky engage and huge CC chains. Zac provides long-range initiation from fog of war. Malphite is the 'unstoppable' point-and-click R-engage alternative. Pick Sejuani if you want to be unkillable, Zac if you want to fly.
Amumu's Keystone Choice
Aftershock is the standard choice for tanking and reliable burst when you land your Q. Conqueror is the alternative for a more 'carry-oriented' AP bruiser build that excels in long fights. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight to reach your core items (Sunfire / Liandry's) faster and have your Flash up for those game-winning ults.
Skill Max Order for Amumu
Max E first—the passive damage reduction is vital for your jungle clear and tankiness, and the active damage is your most reliable DPS. Max Q second to reduce the cooldown and increase the stun frequency. W is maxed last as its primary value is the percentage HP damage which scales with enemy items.
Mastering Amumu's Kit
Bandage Toss. You throw a bandage and pull yourself to the target, stunning them. You have 2 charges. This is your lifeblood. Use the first to engage and the second to follow a dash or flash.
Despair. You cry, dealing percentage-HP magic damage to nearby enemies. Keep this active during every fight and jungle camp. It drains mana, so manage it carefully in the early game.
Tantrum. You take reduced physical damage. Activating it deals damage to nearby enemies. The cooldown is reduced every time you are hit—which makes you clear jungle camps and fight in minion waves very fast.
Curse of the Sad Mummy. A massive area stun that deals damage and applies your passive. This is the best engage tool in the game. Use it to stop objective takes or to win late-game fights instantly.
The Amumu Matchup Sheet
Hard Matchup. He can out-sustain you and use his Q to follow your Bandage Toss. Don't fight him 1v1 in the jungle. Wait for teamfights where you have much more impact.
Skill Matchup. You have the CC to stop him, but if you miss your Q, he will shred you. Save your R for the moment he uses his Q (Alpha Strike) so he can't dodge it.
Skill Matchup. He has more early pressure but you outscale him heavily in teamfights. Avoid him in the early game and focus on hitting level 6. Use your Q to catch him after he uses his W dash.
Crying Alone in Jungle
Stop missing your Q! Bandage Toss is your only way to get in or out of a fight. If you waste both charges and miss, you are just a walking potato that the enemy can ignore. Also, don't R just one person unless it's the 15/0 Master Yi. Save your game-changing CC for when you can hit 2-3 priority targets at once.
Missing the first Q usually means the gank is over. Don't waste the second one chasing a lost cause. Land the Q, E immediately to reduce the cooldown, and save the second Q for their Flash. It's about patience, not just mashing buttons.
When CC Isn't Enough
Dodge if facing high-mobility comps with Ezreal, Zed, and Leblanc if your team has no other CC. They will dodge your Q's and kite you to death. Also dodge into Olaf who completely ignores your R with his own.
Olaf is your hard counter—he'll press R and walk right through your Ultimate. Don't even bother fighting him. If they have an Ezreal and a Zed, your Qs will never land. Accept that you're a walking Ult machine and nothing else.
The Frontline Anchor
In teamfights, you are the trigger. Look for a Q-landing on a priority target, or use Flash-R to catch the enemy backline by surprise. Once you've landed your ult, stick to the enemy carries with your W active and spam E. Use your second Q charge to catch anyone who tries to escape or to peel for your own team. You are the heart of the teamfight.
Flash-R is the combo that wins games. Don't wait for your team to go in. You are the go button. If you see three people close together, press it. Even if you die, your team should be able to clean up the wreckage.
The AP Amumu Build
Full AP Assassin Amumu. Malignance -> Stormsurge -> Shadowflame. With this build, a Q-R-E combo will instantly one-shot any non-tank. It's hilariously effective against teams with no tenacity or defensive items. You go from 'Sad Mummy' to 'Nuclear Mummy' in a single item spike.
Malignance is the secret sauce for AP Amumu because it makes your R stay on a 40-second cooldown. Shadowflame is the execute you need to actually finish off the ADC. Only build this if your top laner is a tank, otherwise your team will have no frontline.
When Amumu Comes Online
Level 6 is your first global power spike—the threat of Curse of the Sad Mummy makes every lane fearful. Your biggest item spike is Sunfire Aegis or Liandry's Torment, giving you the sustained damage to duel almost anyone. AP Amumu spikes hardest at 2 items when he can reliably one-shot ADCs.
Level 6 is when you become a real champion. Before that, you're just a delivery guy for a 1-second stun. Once you get Sunfire, you can actually duel most bruisers in the jungle—just keep the W crying and stay in their face.
The 5-Man Curse
Type 'Why is everyone being so mean? :(' in all-chat after you land a 5-man ult and win the game. The sheer irony of the sad mummy destroying an entire team is enough to tilt even the most stoic players. Spam the 'cry' emote while chasing someone down with your W active.
The mastery spam while they are stuck in your Ultimate is the peak of psychological warfare. It tells them that the game is over and it's their own fault. The sadder you look, the more they tilt.
