Champion Stats
Low elo players panic when you Ult them. They flash immediately (into nothing), they spam their CC completely blind, and they run in straight predictable lines that make landing triple shurikens trivial. Zed thrives on this panic state. His W shadow gives you infinite poke range during laning phase and a free escape route, meaning you can bully lane opponents without ever taking return damage. Once you have a lead, you become the ultimate split-push threat. You can shove bot lane, force 2 people to come stop you, kill them both with your shadows, and escape via W or R shadow before reinforcements arrive. You control the tempo of the entire game.
The Shadow Setup
Zed's level 1 is not for kills; it's for establishing dominance through chip damage. Start Q and position to hit both the caster minion wave AND the enemy champion with each shuriken. If they walk up to trade, walk back while throwing another Q. You are a ranged champion at level 1 in practice. By level 2, if they are at 70% HP, you can look for W-E-Q trades that chunk them to 40%, setting up the level 3 or 6 kill. Never auto attack the wave mindlessly; every Q should touch them.
Zed's Best Skins
'Galaxy Slayer Zed' is the pay-to-win choice for experienced smurfs. The audio cues are crisper, the shadow animations are clearer, and the 'Mercy' recall emote is top-tier post-kill BM. 'Shockblade' remains the classic clean skin for purists who want maximum clarity on hitboxes. Avoid 'PROJECT' as it feels heavier and clunkier compared to Galaxy Slayer. 'Debonair' is also an underrated option with smooth animations for those who want something different.
'Galaxy Slayer' is the only one. The animations are so smooth they feel like cheating. 'Shockblade' for the OG energy. 'Death Sworn' for the ghosts. You're a shadow master—look like one. Unseen blade.
When They Ban Zed
If Zed is gone, Talon is the best 'parkour-assassin' pivot. If you want more shadows, Leblanc. But nothing replaces the 'Death Mark' pop. Your time has come.
Talon for the parkour. Qiyana for the elements. Katarina for the resets. Talon is the roaming alternative. Qiyana is the mechanical alternative.
Best Runes for Zed
Electrocute matches your W-E-Q burst combo perfectly—it's almost impossible to NOT proc it during a normal trade. Taste of Blood provides lane sustain for aggressive traders. Ultimate Hunter is non-negotiable for having your R available every major fight; your kill pressure drops by 50% without R. Secondary, take Transendence and Scorch for lane dominance if you want to bully early, or Absolute Focus and Gathering Storm if you're confident in snowballing to late game. Precision secondary (Presence of Mind + Coup de Grace) is also valid if you find yourself going OOM during long skirmishes.
Zed's Skill Order
Maxing Q is essential as it's your primary damage and poke. E max second gives you a stronger slow on Shadow Slash (decaying slow helps you land follow-up Qs) and more frequent energy refunds when hitting multiple targets. W last because the cooldown reduction per rank isn't as valuable as raw damage. A niche option is putting 3 points in Q, then 2-3 in E for early waveclear if you need to hard-shove and roam.
Mastering Zed's Kit
Razor Shuriken damage is reduced after passing through the first target hit. Always try to position so the enemy champion is hit directly without passing through minions for maximum assassination burst. The hitbox is slightly wider than it appears visually, so aim slightly to the side of where they are dodging. Triple shurikens (yours + W + R) at point-blank range is instant death for any squishy.
Living Shadow is your mobility, your escape, and your extension. Do NOT use it aggressively if you have no idea where the enemy jungler is. It is your only disengage. Managing W cooldown is the primary difference between a Silver Zed and a Diamond Zed. Use W to preview where you want to go BEFORE casting abilities—a common mistake is W-E-Q instantly when you should W, wait for them to sidestep, THEN E-Q.
Shadow Slash slows enemies hit, making your Q skillshot much easier to land. The high-elo combo is: walk up, E-E (from you AND your W shadow both hit), THEN throw Q while they are slowed. It's almost impossible to miss. The Q should come AFTER the slow, not at the same time.
Death Mark makes you untargetable for 0.75 seconds. Use this invulnerability window to dodge key abilities like Malphite Ult, Lux Ult, or Syndra Ult. The mark spawns a shadow at your original R location, giving you an escape route. If you are diving under tower, always R as the tower shot is in the air to negate it. You can R back even while CC'd (if not silenced) for surprise escapes.
Zed's Best & Worst Matchups
Hard Counter. He stacks armor. You deal physical damage. He presses R and you die. Do not fight him. Roam bot lane, take jungle camps, do anything except try to solo kill him.
Hard Counter. She can R herself to negate your Death Mark damage completely, or R you to lock you down for her team. Buy Edge of Night and Merc Treads. Focus on waveclear and roaming.
Free Food. Dodge her Q with your W shadow or R untargetability, and she dies instantly. She has no mobility and no defensive steroid. Farm her for gold repeatedly.
Shadow Addiction
You are not LL Stylish in a highlight reel. Do not swap back to your R shadow just to look cool if it puts you right in the middle of 5 enemies with no escapes left. The goal is to kill the priority target AND survive to do it again. Feeding a 700g shutdown because you wanted to style is why players hardstuck. Also, stop holding W in lane 'for safety' when you could be using it to poke—a Zed playing passively is playing wrong.
When Shadows Aren't Enough
Dodge if the enemy team drafts Malphite mid or Lissandra. Malphite stacks armor, making your physical damage useless, and his point-and-click R makes your R useless because he can always engage you. Lissandra's self-R negates your Death Mark damage entirely, and her W roots you when you try to escape. These matchups are misery.
If you're against a Zhonya's, wait for them to use it. Or use your R just to bait it out. You're a psychological assassin. The threat of the shadow is as good as the blade.
The Cleanup Crew
Do not engage first. Ever. You are an assassin, not a tank. Let your frontline go in. Count the enemy CC abilities—wait for Nautilus Q, Lux Q, Leona R to be used. Then, when their peel is gone, W-W forward to close distance and R onto the ADC or carry mage. Unload your full combo (E-Q-Auto-Ignite, land back on R shadow), then immediately assess: can I keep fighting with remaining shadows, or do I need to R-back to safety? If you go in first, every CC in the game funnels onto you and you explode instantly.
The Lethality Nuke Build
Profane Hydra into Axiom Arc. Hydra gives you instant waveclear to perma-shove and move around the map, while Axiom Arc reduces your Ultimate cooldown by 25% on takedowns, allowing you to Ult twice in extended teamfights. Add Opportunity for the out-of-stealth damage boost after W-swapping or R (you count as 'unseen' briefly during shadow swaps). For maximum greed, throw in Hubris to get the kill-statue and bonus AD per takedown. This build is feast-or-famine at its finest.
Yomuu's and Profane Hydra. One W-E-Q will delete anyone with less than 2000 HP. Your R 'Death Mark' is the finishing touch. Enter the shadows and leave them with a mark. Pop! Win.
Zed's Power Spikes
Level 6 is your God Mode window. If the enemy mid laner is at 70% HP and has blown Flash or doesn't have barrier, they are dead. The combo is: R (damage mark applied), Ignite immediately (to proc before Zhonya's), W forward, E (slow), land all three Qs (yours + W shadow + R shadow), Auto attack to proc electrocute. Even if they flash, your shadows have already cast their Qs. This burst is unmatched at level 6. Use this window to get your first kill, back immediately for a Dirk, and repeat until the enemy mid laner tilts.
Shadow Clone Disrespect
Spam 'Laugh' (Ctrl+4) while standing inside your shadow. Enemies can hear it and they don't know which Zed is which. After every solo kill, type '?' in all chat or the 'Look at the cleanse, look at the moves' copypasta if appropriate. Flash mastery emote during your R animation before you land. If you kill someone by swapping shadows multiple times, they will watch the replay, realize they never had a chance, and mentally check out of the game. Zed is the ultimate mental warfare assassin.
