Champion Stats
Low elo players don't respect Leona's level 2 all-in. They will let her Zenith Blade (E) onto them, leading to a quick Q-stun and a certain kill with ignite. They also clump up in teamfights, allowing her to land a 3-4 person ultimate (R) that wins the fight instantly. She is the engine of the 'win lane, win game' strategy.
The Zenith Blade
Leona has a strong level 1 bush cheese. Start Q (Shield of Daybreak) for an auto-reset and stun. If an enemy walks into your brush, a quick AA-Q-AA trade can chunk half their HP or force a Flash. Level 2 with E (Zenith Blade) is your primary engage window—hit the E, follow up with Q, and watch the enemy melt.
Your E dash ignores minions. Use it to engage through a wave where the enemy thinks they're safe. They always expect the Hook champs to be blocked—Leona doesn't care about obstacles.
Skins Worth Buying for Leona
'Solar/Lunar Eclipse Leona' are the legendary smurf choices—the animations are incredible and the 'god-like' transformation is purely for flex. 'Pool Party Leona' is a classic 'toxic' skin with the 'surfboard' stun. 'High Noon Leona' offers amazing modern effects. Avoid 'Valkyrie Leona' as it lacks modern flair.
'Solar/Lunar Eclipse' are Legendary and gorgeous. 'Pool Party' has distinct sound effects. 'High Noon' is modern and crisp. 'Mecha Kingdoms' is clunky. Eclipse or Pool Party are the best.
When They Ban Leona
Nautilus is the closest thing to a point-and-click win button. Alistar if you want the dive power. If you pick Braum, you're playing for the defense—don't be the guy who tries to Zenith Blade with a Braum shield.
Nautilus gives the same hook/lockdown profile. Alistar provides the dive. Braum is the defensive version. Nautilus is the easiest offensive pivot.
Leona's Rune Page
Aftershock is the best choice for maximizing your tankiness when you jump in. Glacial Augment is an alternative for even more CC and disruption. Secondary Inspiration with Hextech Flashtraption and Cosmic Insight to have more creative engage angles from brushes.
What to Max on Leona
Max W first—it's your primary source of tankiness and damage during an engage. Max E second for the lower cooldown on your gap-closer. Max Q last as the stun duration is fixed.
Mastering Leona's Kit
Shield of Daybreak. Leona's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage and stuns the target. It's an auto-attack reset—use it for clearing wards or extra burst.
Eclipse. Leona gains flat damage reduction and bonus Armor/MR. After 3 seconds, she deals magic damage to nearby enemies. If she hits an enemy, the defensive bonuses last longer.
Zenith Blade. Leona fires a blade of light, rooting and dashing to the last champion hit. Use this to dive through minions and reach the enemy carry.
Solar Flare. Leona calls down a beam of solar energy, slowing nearby enemies and stunning those in the center. This is your primary initiation tool—don't be afraid to use it from long range.
Who Leona Beats (And Who Beats Leona)
Hard Matchup. He can Flay (E) you out of your Zenith Blade mid-dash, completely stopping your engage. You have to wait for him to waste his E or use your R to stun him first.
Hard Counter. Her Black Shield (E) completely invalidates your Q and R stuns. You have to bait it out or engage on the person without the shield.
Easy Matchup. As long as you don't get rooted, you can easily walk up and E-Q her for a free kill. She is squishy and has no escape once you are on top of her.
Engage Addiction
Stop Zenith Blading into 5 people without your team! You are tanky, but not immortal. If you dive in and your ADC is 2 screens away, you've just inted. Also, space out your CC—don't cast everything at once. Land the E, wait for the root to end, then Q, then R once the Q stun is expiring.
Your Q resets your auto-attack timer. In early skirmishes, use AA-Q-AA to clear wards instantly or to get that extra bit of damage for the First Blood. It's a small optimization that wins lanes.
When CC Isn't Enough
Dodge if facing heavy 'disengage' comps with Janna, Lulu, or Morgana if your team doesn't have other engage. They can block or cancel your Zenith Blade easily. Also dodge into Thresh who can flay you out of your dash.
Janna and Morgana will ruin your day. Janna's Monsoon pushes you away. Morgana's Black Shield ignores your CC. If you see them, wait for their abilities to be on cooldown before you E in. Or just roam Mid.
Dodge Janna/Morgana. Janna Q/R stops your E. Morgana Black Shield stops your Q/R. You become a walking ward. Thresh Flay also ruins your day.
The Frontline Anchor
In teamfights, you are the primary initiator. Look for a Flash-E or a long-range R on a priority target like the enemy ADC. Once you're in, activate W (Eclipse) to survive the initial burst. Focus on locking down the target with your Q until your team can follow up and finish them. If you miss your R, focus on peeling for your own carries as your Q is very efficient for that.
You are the shield of the team. R from fog to start the fight, then E onto the carry. Use your W to absorb the initial burst. If you survive the first 5 seconds, your team has likely already won the fight. Stay on top of their fed carry and don't let them breathe.
The Aftershock Build
Full AP 'Sun-Goddess' Leona. Everfrost (if available, else Luden's) -> Lich Bane -> Nashor's Tooth. With this build, your E-Q-AA-R combo will literally delete squishies. It's the ultimate 'I'll do it myself' build for carrying games where your ADC is useless. It's high-risk but high-BM.
Trailblazer is a great first item for the move speed. Zeke's for the extra damage. If you're snowballing, Sunfire can actually make you a threat. Leona doesn't need AP to deal damage—she needs to stay alive while her passive does the work.
When Leona Hits Hardest
Level 2 is your first massive kill window. Level 6 is your global engagement spike. Your biggest item spike is reaching Zeke's Convergence, which adds a massive amount of burst to your carry's damage when you CC someone.
Level 2 All-in. Level 6 Roaming. Zeke's Convergence spike. You fall off when everyone gets Tenacity/Banshee's. Win the early game.
The Solar Lockdown
Spam the 'praise the sun' emote every time you land a cross-map R. Type 'The dawn has arrived' in all-chat after a successful engage. The sound of Leona's stun landing is a psychological trigger that makes enemies feel helpless.
Type 'Sunlight's here' in all-chat after a 5-man R. Pinging your armor stats while three people try to kill you is the ultimate flex. Leona is the queen of the engage—show them no mercy.
Spam 'Praise the Sun'. Type 'The dawn has arrived' after a 5-man R. Pinging your Carry's kill count creates positive reinforcement. You are the Commander.
