Why High-Elo Players Smurf with Anivia

Low elo players don't respect Anivia's wall. They will walk too close to a piece of terrain, only to be walled off and forced to Flash or die. They also fail to respect her 'Egg' (Passive), often diving her under tower only to die to the tower while she safely revives. A smurf can use have Q-E combo to chunk an enemy for 50% health while they are slowed in her ultimate, making her trades extremely oppressive.

The Level 1 Cheese

First Blood Strategy

Start Q (Flash Frost). Level 1, if you land a double-hit Q (pass-through and detonation), the damage is surprisingly high. Level 2 with E (Frostbite) gives you the 'double damage' trade on chilled targets. Most mid-laners can't survive two or three of these combos early.

The 'Pay-to-Win' Skin Advantage

'Blackfrost Anivia' is the legendary smurf skin—the unique animations, 'ice-spike' wall, and clear visuals are perfect. 'Papercraft Anivia' is a top-tier choice for its unique aesthetic and smooth effects. 'Divine Phoenix Anivia' offers amazing modern visuals. Avoid 'Team Spirit Anivia' as it's just a recolor.

When They Ban Anivia

Backup Pick: If Anivia is banned, Viktor offers a similar 'control-and-zone' profile. Veigar for the cage and scaling. Taliyah for the terrain manipulation and roaming.

Rune Setup

Best Runes: Electrocute is the best choice for maximizing your burst in your Q-E-AA combo. Phase Rush is an alternative for better safety and kiting in teamfights. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight for cooldowns and mana sustain.

Skill Priority

Order:

E Q WMax E first—it's your primary damage source and deals double damage to chilled targets. Max Q second for the increased stun duration and damage. Max W last as the wall length increases with rank, but it's usable with one point.

Mastering Anivia's Kit

Q Flash Frost

Flash Frost. Anivia fires a ball of ice that chills and stuns enemies it passes through or when it's detonated. Detonate it manually for the double-hit damage and stun!

W Crystallize

Crystallize. Anivia conjures an impenetrable wall of ice that blocks movement. Use this to catch people, scout brushes, or stop a gank in its tracks.

E Frostbite

Frostbite. Anivia blasts an enemy with ice. If the target was recently hit by a fully formed R or a Q, the damage is doubled. This is your primary burst spells.

R Glacial Storm

Glacial Storm. Anivia summons a growing storm of ice and hail that deals damage and slows enemies. At full size, it deals double damage and applies a heavy chill for your E.

Matchup Tips

Vs Fizz

Hard Counter. He can jump over your wall and dodge your Q with E (Playful/Trickster). You have to stay very far back and wait for his E to be on cooldown before engaging.

Vs Zed

Skill Matchup. You can poke him early, but post-6 his R is dangerous. Use your wall to block his escape path and your Q-stun when he reappears from his shadow. Your Egg is a huge life-saver here.

Hard Counter. He naturally takes less magic damage and can blink over your wall every few seconds. Post-level 11, he is a nightmare for you. Try to punish him early or roam.

The Ego Check

WARNING: Stop wasting your wall! Crystallize (W) is your most powerful tool. If you use it and miss, you lose your only way to trap enemies or escape. Also, manage your mana! Glacial Storm (R) drains mana rapidly early game—don't leave it on for no reason. Also, don't forget to detonate your Q—if you miss the detonation, you miss the stun!

When to Queue Dodge

Dodge if facing heavy 'long-range poke' or 'dash-over-walls' comps with Kassadin, Xerath, or Lucian if your team has no engage. They can bypass your wall or hit you from afar. Also dodge into Vladimir who can pool your slow.

Teamfight Role

In teamfights, you are a zone-control goddess. Your job is to make the battlefield a nightmare for the enemy. Place your R (Glacial Storm) in the middle of the fight or to cut off a path. Use W (Crystallize) to trap an over-extended enemy or to peel for your ADC. Land your Q (Flash Frost) on a high-value target and follow up with E. You are the wall that the enemy can't pass.

The 'Disrespect' Build

Full AP 'Absolute Zero' Anivia. Everfrost -> Seraph's Embrace -> Rabadon's Deathcap. With this build, if you catch someone in a wall and land a Q-E, they are 100% dead. It's hilarious to see an enemy team unable to move through a jungle corridor because of your R and W. Maximum BM, high-risk.

Power Windows

Level 6 is your biggest spike (R access). Your waveclear becomes infinite and your zone control oppressive. Your biggest item spike is reaching Rod of Ages or Archangel's Staff, which gives you the mana needed to maintain your storm indefinitely.

Tilt Factor

Type 'Egg-cellent!' in all-chat after a reviving from your passive while the enemy dies to tower. Spam the 'laugh' emote while someone is trapped against your wall. The sight of a giant ice bird making a bridge you can't cross is purely tilting.
