Patch 26.4 Update: Hwei received changes this patch. Check the full patch 26.4 notes for details.
Low Elo players cannot comprehend his kit complexity. They walk into your QE (Molten Fissure) assuming it's just visual effects. They clump up, allowing you to hit massive R (Spiraling Despair) explosions. But mostly, they fail to punish his cooldowns because they don't track which 'Subject' (Q, W, or E) is on cooldown. A smurf abuses this information asymmetry to exert constant pressure.
The Lane Control Setup
The 'Molten Push'. Start Q (Subject: Disaster). Use QE (Molten Fissure) on the wave and the enemy champion simultaneously as they walk up. It deals damage and pushes the wave. You get Level 2 first. Take E (Subject: Torment). EQ (Grim Visage) -> QQ (Devastating Fire) -> Passive Detonation triggers Electrocute/Comet. Half their HP is gone instantly.
Your WE (Mana sustain) allows you to stay in lane forever. Use QE (Lava) to clear waves and zone simultaneously. You dictate where the enemy stands. If they step in lava, they take damage. If they walk around, they clump for your EE. Paint the lane your color.
Skins Worth Buying for Hwei
'Winterblessed Hwei' is elegant, but the skill expressions can be faint on snowy maps (pay-to-win/lose?). 'Default Hwei' has the highest clarity for your own artistic combos. Stick to the classic or Winterblessed for the cleanest VFX.
'Winterblessed' is beautiful but the white effects can blend into ARAM maps. Base skin is incredible. The ink aesthetics are core to his identity. Stick to base or wait for a darker themed skin for better contrast.

When They Ban Hwei
Xerath if you want the artillery range. Orianna if you want the utility and zoning. Vel'Koz for the true damage geometry. Hwei is unique, but Vel'Koz matches the 'angles' gameplay best.
Xerath offers similar long-range artillery but less utility. Orianna provides similar teamfight control and zoning balls. Vel'Koz is for the geometry-based destruction. Xerath matches the 'snipe from screens away' feel.
Hwei's Rune Page
Arcane Comet is the standard for lane dominance. First Strike is viable for gold generation if you are smurfing hard. Manaflow Band and Transendence are non-negotiable (you need Haste). Secondary Inspiration: Biscuits and Cosmic Insight for lower summoner spell cooldowns.
What to Max on Hwei
Max Q (Disaster) first for damage. Max E (Torment) second for the CC cooldown reduction. Max W (Serenity) last. Put points in R whenever possible.
Mastering Hwei's Kit
Spiraling Despair. A projectile that latches onto an enemy. It expands, slows, and deals DoT, then explodes. Hitting a clumped team wins the game.
Who Hwei Beats (And Who Beats Hwei)
Nightmare. He Troll Poles (E) over your fear (EQ) and kills you. Rush Zhonya's or dodge.
Skill Matchup. You both have long range. Use QW to poke her when she tries to E. You have more versatility, she has simpler burst. Cleanse can be useful.
Hard. Do not use EQ until he uses E to snap back or R. If you use it early, he runs you down. Space perfectly with QE.
Skillshot Ego
Stop button mashing! Hwei requires specific, deliberate inputs. If you panic and press QW (Severing Bolt) instead of QQ (Fireball) in a close range fight, you die. You must memorize your combos: WE (Buff) -> QE (Slow) -> EE (Pull) -> R -> QQ (Burst). Practice this until it is muscle memory. If you can't play piano, don't play Hwei.
When the Poke Doesn't Land
Dodge Fizz, Zed, and Yone. They have the mobility to dodge your skillshots and the burst to kill you instantly. You have one self-peel (EQ), and if you miss it, you are dead.
Dodge Fizz, Zed, and Yone. They have the mobility to dodge your skillshots and the burst to kill you instantly. You have one self-peel (EQ), and if you miss it, you are dead. Hwei is an artist, not a brawler—keep them at distance or die.
Dodge Fizz, Zed, or Yone. They have the mobility to dodge your skillshots and the burst to kill you instantly. You have exactly one self-peel tool (EQ), and if you miss it against them, you are dead.
Zone Control in Fights
You are an Artillery Mage AND a Control Mage. Start by zoning with QE (Lava). Buff your ADC with WQ (Speed) or WW (Shield). Look for a catch with EW (Root Eye). When the fight erupts, R the biggest clump of enemies. Use EE to pull them all into the center of the R. Then execute the low HP target with QW (Lightning). You dictate the pace of the fight.
Each subject (Q, W, E) has a 1-second 'cooldown' after you cast an ability from that subject. For example, after QQ, you can't cast QW for 1 second. Learn the rhythm of your brushes to maintain a persistent stream of spells.
The Control Mage Build
Liandry's Torment -> Blackfire Torch -> Horizon Focus. The 'Everything Burn' build. Your QE covers the entire lane in fire. Anyone who steps on it burns for 10% of their HP. It's area denial at its finest.

When Hwei Hits Hardest
Level 2 (EQ-QQ Combo). Level 6 (Ultimate Wombo Combo). 2-Item Spike (Ability Haste breakpoint).
Level 2 (EQ-QQ Combo). Level 6 (Ultimate Wombo Combo). 2-Item Spike (Ability Haste breakpoint). Hwei scales with his artist's palette—the more items you have, the more choices you have to win the fight.
Level 2 (EQ-QQ Combo) is a surprisingly strong trade. Level 6 is your teamfight explosion. 2-Item Spike (Ludens + Horizon) gives you the Ability Haste to cycle spellbooks constantly. You scale with choices.
The Zone Control
Type 'Art is an explosion!' after landing a 5-man ult. The visual clutter of Hwei's abilities is mentally exhausting for enemies. Overwhelm them with colors. Spam Mastery 7 while you are painting their doom.
