Champion Stats
Low elo players don't understand possession mechanics. They don't disengage after a kill, allowing you to chain resets indefinitely. They don't focus you when you're possessing (because they literally forget where you are). Furthermore, Viego's kit allows you to outplay bad situations—if you're losing a 1v1, kill a minion with Q and possess it for a heal. Every skirmish is a chance for a comeback.
The Possession Setup
Start Q. Your Q has a passive—auto-attacking enemies twice marks them, and the second auto heals you based on their current HP. At level 1, walk up to the enemy jungler at their buff (if you have lane priority), auto-Q-auto. You will out-trade almost anyone because of your passive healing. This works especially well against squishy junglers like Nidalee or Kindred.
Don't just take the body. Look at their items. Did they have Zhonya's? Use it. Did they have Flash? Use it. You are playing 5 champs at once.
The Viego Skin Tier List
'Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Viego' is the cleanest skin with less visual clutter on his Q. 'Lunar Beast Viego' has an excellent R animation that's faster-looking. The base skin is actually decent but the cape can obscure your hitbox during possessions, making it slightly harder to track yourself.
'Pentakill' for the rockstar metal. 'Lunar Beast' for the sleekness. 'King' for the lore. Viego is about taking over—pick the king that looks most prepared to rule. Heartbreak and steel.
'Pentakill' is clean. 'Lunar Beast' is smooth. 'Soul Fighter' is anime-cool. Pentakill fits the 'Ruined King' rockstar vibe best.
When They Ban Viego
If Viego is gone, Yone is the best 'outplay-skirmisher' pivot. If you want more resets, Master Yi. But nothing replaces the 'possess' mechanic. The Ruining continues elsewhere.
Master Yi for the resets. Yone for the aesthetics. Kayn for the transformation. Master Yi is the original 'reset penta' champ.
Runes That Work on Viego
Conqueror is mandatory—Viego stacks it instantly with his passive and Q resets. Triumph synergizes perfectly with your reset-based playstyle (HP back on takedowns). Legend: Alacrity for attack speed. Coup de Grace for execute damage. Secondary Magical Footwear + Cosmic Insight for boots value and summoner CDR.
Leveling Viego's Abilities
Max Q first for the damage and healing. Max E second for the longer camouflage duration (essential for ganks). Max W last because you're using it primarily as a gap closer/CC, not for damage.
Mastering Viego's Kit
Blade of the Ruined King has TWO parts—the stab AND the passive mark. Marked enemies take bonus damage from your second auto and heal you. This is your sustain tool. Spam Q in jungle camps for HP.
Spectral Maw is a charge-up dash that stuns. The longer you charge, the longer the stun. However, charging makes you predictable. Flash during the charge for instant point-blank stun.
Harrowed Path creates a camouflage zone around terrain. You become invisible and gain attack speed. Use this to gank from angles enemies don't expect. The zone follows you as long as you stay near terrain.
Heartbreaker is an execute that deals bonus damage based on missing HP. It also EXITS possession early. Use R to finish a target, then immediately possess them if they die. The R->possess chain is your bread and butter.
Matchups That Matter for Viego
Hard Counter. His smoke screen makes you unable to possess anything because you can't see kills. His armor passive makes him unkillable.
Skill Matchup. Her R denies your execute kills. Wait for Lamb's Respite to end, then R. Contest her marks aggressively.
Skill Matchup. He can kick you out of possessions or mid-W charge. Respect his early damage. You outscale hard after two items.
Body Hop Greed
Stop trying to possess the tank. When you kill someone, you become them with a portion of their HP. Possessing a Leona gives you 300 HP and useless abilities. Wait for the squishy to die, THEN possess. If you possessed the wrong target, press R immediately to exit and become Viego again.
Don't just possess for the sake of it. If you're 20/0, you're stronger than them. Use the possess for the R-reset and the brief invulnerability. Then R out and keep swinging. Smart royalty. Win.
When They Kite You Out
Dodge if facing heavy CC comps (Leona + Nautilus + pick any other CC champion). You need to chain possessions—if you're permanently CC'd, you can't reset. Also dodge into Rammus and Malphite—armor stackers ruin your on-hit damage.
The Split Decision
Wait for the fight to start—DO NOT engage. Your job is cleanup. When someone dies (enemy or ally), dash in and start chaining. Possess -> use their abilities -> R to execute another -> possess again. The dream is a pentakill where you possessed 3 different champions. Position for resets, not for initial engage.
Reset city. Waiting for the first kill is better than forcing a bad engage. Clean up the fight.
Don't engage. Wait. Let your team die. Let the enemy get low. Then go in. Reset. Possess. Reset. Possess. Clean up the fight.
The Crit Viego Build
Kraken Slayer into Blade of the Ruined King into Guinsoo's Rageblade. Full on-hit build. Your Q applies on-hit effects, and with Rageblade, you shred tanks and squishies alike. Add Terminus for true damage on every other auto. You become a 1v5 sustain machine.
Kraken and BORK into Terminus. You're a healing monster. Your Q passive is the key—AA twice for the heal and damage. You're a bruiser-assassin hybrid. Kill, possess, repeat. The mist rises.
Kraken Slayer -> Trinity Force -> Sundered Sky. You want On-Hit and Burst. Possessing a tank with full HP is broken.
Viego's Strongest Moments
Level 6, when your R becomes a gap closer AND an execute. Before 6, you have to walk into fights. After 6, you can dive backlines. Two-item spike (Blade + Trinity/Kraken) is your murder window—you can 1v2 any squishy combination.
Level 6 for the 'Heartbreaker' R. 1-item BORK spike. Level 11 for the resets. By late game, one kill starts the pentakill. You are the Ruined King—reclaim your throne. All will serve.
Level 6 Execute. First Reset in a teamfight. If you get one reset, you usually win the fight. If you get none, you lose.
The Ruined King Reset
Kill the enemy, then use their abilities to kill their teammates. Nothing tilts more than dying to your own champion's abilities. If you possess the Lux and use her ult to kill the ADC, type 'thx for ult' in chat. The psychological damage is immeasurable.
Possessing a fed enemy is your best move. Use their 10/0 stats to kill the rest of their team. Then R to the next. You're a one-man-army of everyone. The crown is yours.
Kill the support. CC the ADC. Kill the ADC. Kill the rest. It's not your kit, it's theirs.
