Champion Stats
Low elo players do not respect the burst damage of the 'Shy Combo' or any fast double-cast combo. They see you at 20% HP and think they can walk up and finish you, but you E-R1-Flash-W-Auto-Q3-R2 them for their entire HP bar before they can cast a single spell. Riven's snowball potential is S-tier; one kill in lane translates into complete lane dominance because her kit has no resources—only cooldowns. You never run out of mana because you have none.
The Fast Q Combo
Q stacking (known as 'Fast Q combo') is all you need. Hide in the lane bush. When the enemy walks up to CS, burst out: Q1-Auto-Q2-Auto-Q3-Auto. With Conqueror stacking and Ignite ready, this combo kills almost anyone or forces Flash. The key is to move-command between each Q and Auto to cancel the Q animation. Practice this until it's muscle memory.
The 'Fast Q' isn't just for damage; it's for the Conqueror stacks. At Level 1, you can win almost any matchup if you land all 3 cancels. Don't be afraid to Ignite early.
The Riven Skin Tier List
'Dawnbringer Riven' has the smoothest animations and clearest hitboxes—it's effectively pay-to-win for Riven players. 'Battle Bunny Prime' is iconic for the mental warfare factor. 'Championship Riven' is the OG flex skin (especially the vintage version). 'Spirit Blossom' feels slightly clunky to some players but looks beautiful.
'Dawnbringer' is pay-to-win. 'Battle Bunny Prime' for the flex. 'Spirit Blossom' for the aesthetic. 'Coven' for the dark vibes. Choose your blade and start the animation-cancelling grind.
'Dawnbringer' is pay-to-win smooth animations. 'Broken Covenant' is crisp. 'Battle Bunny' is classic. 'Championship' is legacy. Dawnbringer feels the fastest.
When They Ban Riven
Fiora offers mechanical outplays. Irelia offers dash resets. Aatrox (the Riven rework that wasn't) offers knockup combos. Aatrox is easier, Fiora is harder.
Fiora for the mechanics. Camille for the precision. Irelia for the dashing. Fiora is the skill expression match.
Runes That Work on Riven
Conqueror is mandatory—Riven's multi-hit combo stacks it instantly and the healing in extended fights is essential. Secondary tree: Nimbus Cloak + Transcendence. Riven scales EXTREMELY well with Ability Haste (CDR), so Transcendence is non-negotiable. Nimbus Cloak gives chase potential after Flash, or escape potential after using Ignite/TP.
Leveling Riven's Abilities
Max Q for damage—Q is your primary DPS tool and has 3 casts. Max E second for lower shield cooldown, which equals more mobility and survivability. W last; it's just the stun.
Mastering Riven's Kit
Broken Wings goes in the direction of your MOUSE CURSOR, not your champion's facing. Hover your cursor over your target for Q1/Q2, then flick cursor over a wall for Q3 escape. The 'Fast Q' animation cancel involves issuing a move-command between each Q and Auto to skip the recovery animation—practice this endlessly.
Ki Burst is an instant AoE stun with no cast time. You can 'Doublecast' W with E by pressing E-W together; this hides the W animation completely within the E dash, creating an instant-stun engage. E-W-Q3 is a classic engage pattern.
Valor is your animation cancel core ability. You can E-R1, E-Q, E-W, or even E-R1-Flash all in one fluid motion. The shield absorbs a fixed amount of damage; use it to tank the enemy's key trading ability (like Renekton's empowered W). Valor can also hop over most walls, especially the thin ones.
Blade of the Exile (R1) increases your attack damage and extends your auto-attack range for the duration. R2 (Wind Slash) is an execute that deals massively increased damage to low-HP enemies. ALWAYS cast R1 during or before engagement (E-R1 to hide the animation), and save R2 for when they're below 30% HP.
Matchups That Matter for Riven
The Classic Counter. Respect his Fury meter. His empowered W stun is longer and breaks shields. Bait his E before engaging. You can outscale him post-2 items, but early lane is his domain.
Annoying Matchup. His Q silence cancels your combos entirely. Shield his Q with E. Don't fight while silenced—just disengage. You outscale him slightly.
Skill Matchup of the Century. She can parry your W stun OR your Q3 knockup. Bait her W before using your CC. Whoever burns their key ability first usually loses.
Animation Cancel Ego
If you do not know the Fast Q combo, do NOT play Riven in Ranked. Go to practice tool. You lose approximately 30% of your DPS without proper animation canceling. Also, stop wasting all 3 Qs just to gap close—you need to save Q3 for the knockup or at least one Q for continued trading. Always have an escape plan (E or remaining Qs).
Every auto needs to be cancelled by a movement or an ability. If you're standing still, you're not a Riven main, you're a victim. Use the Practice Tool until your fingers bleed. It's worth it for the 1v5.
When They Kite You Out
Dodge if the enemy top drafts Renekton or Poppy. Renekton is Riven's historical counter—his empowered W stun breaks your combos, his sustain outheals your burst, and his early game is stronger. Poppy's W literally stops all your dashes, and her passive shield + E into walls devastates you. These matchups require jungle help to survive.
The Split Decision
Flash-Q3 engage onto the enemy backline is the standard teamfight opener. Alternatively, flank from the side and oneshot the ADC with the Shy Combo (E-R1-Flash-W-Auto-R2-Q). If you cannot reach the backline, switch to peeling for your carries—Riven's W stun and Q knockup are excellent peel tools. You are versatile; adapt your role based on the teamfight state.
Standard combo: E-R1-Flash-W3-Auto-R2-Q. It's instant. If you can't do this, peel. Your W+Q3 AoE stun is amazing for protecting your ADC.
Flash-Q3 on the backline. W stun. R2 execute. If you can't reach them, peel the diver. You are versatile. Don't tunnel on one combo.
The CDR Riven Build
Profane Hydra into Eclipse is pure damage glass cannon. If anyone touches you, you die. But if you touch anyone, they explode instantly. This build is for players who are confident in their ability to outplay every engage. For a more balanced option, Goredrinker/Sundered Sky provides sustain.
Spear of Shojin is mandatory. The extra Haste on basic abilities makes your E-shield available every 3 seconds. Combine with Eclipse for the 'never-die' brawler style. You're a dancing blade of death.
Eclipse -> Sundered Sky -> Death's Dance. You need Haste and AD. Sundered Sky crits on your passive autos are huge. Don't build glass cannon unless you are BoxBox.
Riven's Strongest Moments
Level 3 is your first all-in window—Q, W, E are all unlocked for full combo execution. Level 6 adds R1 for bonus AD and R2 for execute damage, making you a lethal threat to any laner. Eclipse/Goredrinker completion is your next spike. Respect these timings; don't force fights at level 1-2 unless they massively misposition.
Level 3 with the full kit, Level 6 with the Wind-Slash, and 2nd item completion. By 3 items, you should be a raid boss. If the game goes past 40, you might get outscaled by tanks—end it fast.
The Shy Combo
Wall hopping away from 5 people while at 10 HP is the ultimate tilt-inducer. Spam laugh (Ctrl+4) while escaping. Drop a '?' in all chat after every outplay. 'Faker what was that' if you dodge a key ability with E. Riven players are notorious for BM—embrace it.
E-R1-Flash-W-Auto-R2-Q. It's the most iconic combo for a reason. Practice it until you can do it in your sleep. If you hit it, the ADC dies before the stun ends. It's poetry in motion. Be a god.
