Season 16 ranked reset: placements, MMR and LP explained

Season 16 ranked reset, placements and MMR guide

The Season 16 ranked reset changes where your climb starts. It does not prove your main account is broken, and buying another account does not guarantee better LP gains. Before you blame last year's match history, separate your visible rank from the rating used to build your games.

Updated October 23, 2026. This guide covers the January reset and the later Apex-tier exception. Use the linked Riot notices for the rules affecting your region.

What happened in the Season 16 ranked reset?

Riot's patch 26.1 notes set the 2026 ranked start for January 8 at noon in local server time. Ranks reset, then five provisional games determined your starting rank.

Your first displayed rank is a starting point. Do not compare a provisional badge with your peak from a full year of games and call the difference stolen progress.

There was also a specific midyear exception. In patch 26.9, Riot reset Master, Grandmaster and Challenger players in NA, EUW, EUNE, BR, LAN and TR to Master 0 LP, including their MMR. That was an announced response to Apex ladder problems. It was not a reset for every rank or every region.

If you are Gold in OCE, that Apex notice does not describe your account. Check the scope before copying advice from a Challenger stream.

Season 16 ranked reset: rank is not MMR

MMR is hidden, and LP helps reconcile your visible rank with it. Riot explains that an ordinary annual reset can leave your rank below your MMR, producing larger gains as you climb back. When rank is above MMR, losses can cost more than wins award. Wins and losses continue to change MMR.

A bad LP session does not mean your rating is permanently locked. Equally, a good session does not establish a rate you will keep for the rest of the year. There is no universal +30 LP setting for a new account.

Our MMR checker gives you an estimate from available information. It cannot read Riot's private rating or certify a precise hidden number. Treat it as context for your recent games.

How placements work

Riot's placement rules specify five matches per ranked queue. Results, opponent difficulty and the previous year's rank influence placement. For a first-time ranked player, Swiftplay and Normal Draft MMR also contribute. A placement loss awards zero LP rather than deducting LP, but it still matters to the result.

An account with no ranked history is not a blank ticket to the rank you want. Its starting point still needs to be assessed.

Before your placements, get the boring things right: a stable connection, a role you actually play and a backup pick you can use when your main gets banned. The season opener is a poor time to discover that your emergency top lane pick has three losing matchups you have never played.

Read your LP without turning it into a conspiracy

Write down your recent gains and losses in the same queue. Keep Solo/Duo and Flex separate when reviewing your results. Compare stretches where you played a similar role and champion pool, rather than combining your serious climb with every off-role experiment.

Then review decisions you can change. Did you give away the wave to chase a low-health support? Did your third death happen before you bought anything? Those questions produce a better next game than checking the account's creation date again.

Avoid projecting a fixed number of wins to Diamond from today's LP. Promotions, losses and changing gains make that a planning estimate at best. If a seller promises a rank after a certain number of games, ask what happens when the player does not win those games.

Should you use your main or another account?

Keep your main if your aim is to improve the rank you have already earned. You keep your champions, settings and match history, and you can measure whether your changes help over time.

An alternate account can serve a different purpose, such as practicing another role without mixing that experiment into your main's ranked record. It still has to qualify for ranked, and it still has to win. Read our level 30 and ranked eligibility guide before assuming level alone unlocks the queue.

If you choose to buy LoL accounts, check the listed region, owned champions, BE balance and terms. BE is spending power, not proof that your preferred champion is unlocked. Buying or sharing accounts carries account-purchase risks, including Riot enforcement and recovery disputes. An account's age does not make it immune to a ban. A seller's warranty is a separate commercial promise, with its own scope in the refund policy.

There is no purchase that guarantees easier matchmaking, exemption from smurf detection or a higher final rank. Choose an account for a practical use you understand. Your next ranked game still asks you to play the map well.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Season 16 ranked reset erase my MMR?

The ordinary annual reset does not give everyone a blank MMR. Riot separately reset rank and MMR for Master+ players in six regions in patch 26.9.

How many placement games do I play?

You play five placement matches in each ranked queue to determine your starting tier and division.

Can my main account recover from poor LP gains?

Yes. Poor gains do not mean the account is permanently locked. Continue evaluating your results and decisions rather than treating one LP pattern as permanent.

Does a new account guarantee better LP or a higher rank?

No. A new account guarantees neither better LP gains nor a higher rank. First-time placements can use Swiftplay and Normal Draft MMR.

Are aged accounts immune to bans?

No. Account age does not establish ban immunity, and a seller warranty does not override Riot enforcement.
