Why High-Elo Players Smurf with Wukong
Low elo players don't know how to tell the difference between Wukong and his Decoy. A smurf can simply press 'S' to stop moving, making the enemy think they've used W, only to jump on them 2 seconds later. They also clump up in teamfights, allowing Wukong to land a 5-man knock-up that sets up an easy ace. His passive (Stone Skin) also makes him surprisingly tanky in prolonged trades, catching enemies off guard who think they can win a 1v1.
The Level 1 Cheese
First Blood Strategy
Start E (Nimbus Strike) for early attack speed and gap-close. If the enemy is squishy, you can E onto them level 1 and just auto-attack them with the AS buff. Level 2 with Q (Crushing Blow) gives you the armor shred and auto-reset needed to win almost any early trade. A well-timed Flash-E-Q combo can secure First Blood.
The 'Pay-to-Win' Skin Advantage
'Radiant Wukong' is the definitive smurf skin—the unique cloud-ride and golden effects are amazing for BM. 'Underworld Wukong' is a great 'stealthy' choice with unique visuals. 'Battle Academia Wukong' offers amazing modern effects. Avoid 'Volcanic Wukong' unless you want the absolute basic look.
When They Ban Wukong
Backup Pick: If Wukong is banned,
Jax offers a similar 'jump-in and AA' bruiser profile.
Aatrox for a more drain-tank teamfight presence.
Vi (if jungle) for the point-and-click lockdown.
Rune Setup
Best Runes: Conqueror is the best choice for maximizing your damage and healing in teamfights. Lethal Tempo is an alternative for even stronger early 1v1s. Secondary Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight to reach your core items faster.
Skill Priority
Order:
Q → E → WMax Q first—it's your primary damage and armor-shred tool, and the range increase per level is vital. Max E second for the increased attack speed and base damage. Max W last as the clone duration and damage isn't as important as your primary combo.
Mastering Wukong's Kit
Crushing Blow. Wukong's next basic attack deals bonus physical damage, gains extra range, and reduces the target's Armor for a few seconds. It's an auto-attack reset.
Warrior Trickster. Wukong becomes invisible for a short duration and leaves behind a clone that attacks nearby enemies. The clone also mimics Wukong's Q and R.
Nimbus Strike. Wukong dashes to a target and sends out images to attack nearby enemies, gaining an Attack Speed buff. Use this to gap-close and initiate trades.
Cyclone. Wukong spins his staff, dealing physical damage and knocking up nearby enemies. He can cast this twice within a short window. It deals bonus damage based on the enemy's max HP.
Matchup Tips
Skill Matchup. You can shred his armor with Q, but he can silence you and out-sustain you. You have to use your W to dodge his Q-slam and save your E for after his spin ends.
Hard Matchup. He wins prolonged trades. You have to poke with E-Q-W out to avoid his hook. Use your R to knock him up when he tries to execute you with his own R.
Easy Matchup. Your W can block her hook-shot or her ultimate's impact. You also have better early damage with your E-AS buff. Poke her until her shield is down, then all-in.
The Ego Check
WARNING: Stop using your R the moment you jump in! Sometimes waiting 0.5 seconds for the enemy to clump or use their escapes is more effective. Also, don't waste your W for poke—it's your only escape and most powerful defensive tool. Use it to dodge key projectiles or when you're sure you can secure a kill.
When to Queue Dodge
Dodge if facing heavy 'true damage' or 'unstoppable' comps with Olaf or Fiora if your team has no other peel. They can ignore your knock-up or out-duel you easily. Also dodge into Malphite who can just out-tank your armor shred.
Teamfight Role
In teamfights, you are the primary initiator. Look for a flank or use your E to jump onto a carry. Activate R (Cyclone) to knock them up, then use W (Decoy) to reposition and wait for your second R cast. Your job is to disrupt the backline and shred the frontline's armor. You are the chaos that let's your team clean up.
The 'Disrespect' Build
Full Lethality 'Sudden Death' Wukong. Duskblade (if available, else Youmuu's) -> Collector -> Essence Reaver. With this build, your E-Q combo will literally delete squishies. It turns a bruiser into an assassin who can disappear and reappear to one-shot the ADC. High-risk, maximum flex.
Power Windows
Level 2 is your first massive kill window with the E-Q trade. Level 6 is your global teamfight spike. Your biggest item spike is reaching Divine Sunderer or Trinity Force, which significantly increases your Q-damage and sustain.
Tilt Factor
Spam the 'stop' command to fake a clone. Type 'Which one is real?' in all-chat after a successful escape. The sight of a Wukong jumping into your whole team and then seeing 5 people knocked up is one of the most demoralizing experiences in League.
