Why are my LP gains so low?
You win and get +15. You lose and drop -25. Nothing feels fair. The reason is almost never a bug or a shadow ban. It is a single hidden number sitting underneath your rank, and once you can see it, the whole system stops feeling random.
Here is the short answer, before the theories start: your LP gains are low because your hidden MMR is at or below your visible rank. The matchmaker already thinks you belong where you are, or slightly lower, so it pays you less for a win and charges you more for a loss until the two numbers line up.
That is the whole mechanic. Everything below is just detail on how it got that way and what actually moves it.
What LP and MMR Actually Are
Your rank, the Gold II with 40 LP that you see on the client, is the public scoreboard. It is designed to feel like progress.
Your MMR (matchmaking rating) is the private number Riot uses to pick the ten players in your game. Riot never shows it to you. It is the real measure of where the system thinks you sit, and your LP gains are effectively a running bet on whether your visible rank should catch up to it or fall back to it.
When you gain or lose LP, you are watching your rank get dragged toward your MMR.
Read Your Own LP Numbers
You do not need a calculator. The size of your gains and losses tells you exactly where your MMR sits relative to your rank.
| What you see per game | What it means | Your MMR vs rank |
|---|---|---|
| +25 / -15 | The system thinks you are underranked. Your climb is wide open. | Above your division |
| +19 / -19 | You are almost exactly where the matchmaker expects. Even trades. | Matches your division |
| +15 / -22 | The "why are my gains low" zone. You are paying an overrank tax. | Below your division |
| +11 / -30 | Heavy MMR debt. Usually a loss streak, a bad placement run, or decay. | Well below your division |
If you are reading this article, you are almost certainly in row three or row four. Good news: neither one is permanent, and neither one means the game is rigged against you.
How Your MMR Fell Behind Your Rank
Five things push MMR below your displayed rank. Most players are living with two or three at once.
A loss streak
Consecutive losses drop your MMR faster than your LP, because LP has floors and demotion shields. Your rank stays put while the hidden number sinks, and the next wins pay peanuts.
Weak placements
A rough placement run seeds a low starting MMR. You can climb back in rank quickly on a promo shield while your MMR is still stuck in the basement.
Decay
Inactivity decays MMR quietly in the background. You log back in at the same rank, but the matchmaker has already marked you down.
Duo drag
Queuing with a much lower-MMR friend pulls your effective matchmaking rating down for those games, and the LP math follows it.
You climbed on a hot streak
A run of wins can push your rank a division past where your MMR settled. The tax you are paying now is the system reeling that overshoot back in.
Notice what is not on that list: hidden ban, honor level, dodges, autofill, or an account "flag." Those are the usual Reddit explanations, and none of them set your per-game LP. The number under your rank does.
How To Actually Fix Low LP Gains
You cannot trick MMR. You can only outperform the bracket you are actually in. That sounds blunt, but it is also freeing, because it means the fix is entirely on your side of the screen.
1. Win against your real MMR, not your rank. Low gains mean you are being matched near your true level. Beating those games is what moves the hidden number, and once it passes your rank, gains snap back to +20 and beyond. 2. Stop the bleeding before you grind. Two or three losses in a row is when MMR debt compounds fastest. Queue off tilt, not on it. 3. Solo queue when you are climbing. Duo can be great, but not with a much lower-rated friend while you are trying to erase an MMR gap. 4. Play enough games for the average to move. MMR is an average over many games, so a single good night barely shifts it. A consistent week does. 5. Fix the pattern that is losing games, not the champion. Low gains plus a stalled climb almost always trace back to a repeatable mistake: the same death timer, the same greedy recall, the same lost lead. That is the part worth diagnosing.
That last point is where most guides stop and shrug. "Just play better" is true and useless. The real question is: better at what, specifically, in your games.
Stop guessing which mistake is costing you LP
The AussyELO Deep Report reads your recent ranked games and pinpoints the exact patterns dragging your MMR below your rank: where your leads evaporate, which timers you die on, and what is actually capping your climb. Not generic advice. Your account.
Get your Deep ReportDoes Low LP Mean I Am Hardstuck?
Not necessarily. Hardstuck means your MMR and your rank have met and settled, so you are trading LP evenly and going nowhere. Low gains with heavy losses is the opposite: a gap that is still closing. It feels worse, but it is more fixable, because there is a real gap to climb back through once you stack wins.
The one thing that turns a temporary MMR dip into a genuine wall is repeating the mistake that opened it. That is why seeing the number is only step one. Seeing the pattern behind it is what ends the plateau.

Why Are My LP Gains So Low FAQ
Why do I gain 15 LP but lose 25?
Your hidden MMR is below your current rank. The system expects you to lose those games, so a win is worth less and a loss costs more until your rank falls back to match your MMR, or your MMR climbs to meet your rank.
Will my LP gains go back to normal?
Yes, as soon as your MMR catches up to or passes your rank. Stack wins against your current matchmaking level and gains return to +20 or higher. It is a moving average, so it takes a run of games, not one good night.
Does a loss streak lower my MMR permanently?
No. Loss streaks drop MMR faster than LP, which is why gains shrink afterwards, but the effect is fully recoverable. Winning games at your new matchmaking level rebuilds it.
Can I see my hidden MMR?
Riot does not display it, but you can estimate it from your recent ranked games. Check your hidden MMR here for a free read on where the number actually sits.
Does duo queue lower my LP gains?
It can. Queuing with a much lower-MMR friend pulls your effective matchmaking rating down for those games, which shrinks your gains while you play together. Solo queue when you are actively trying to climb out of an MMR gap.
Is low LP a sign of a rigged or shadow-banned account?
No. Per-game LP is set entirely by the gap between your MMR and your rank. There is no hidden ban or honor penalty that changes your gains. If you are getting less than you expect, your MMR is simply lower than your displayed rank.
