LoL vs Dota 2 looks like a simple comparison until you actually switch games. Both put five players on each side of a map with lanes, towers and an enemy base to destroy. Your first instinct is to bring your old habits with you. Some help. Others get you killed while you're still wondering what happened.
The biggest differences are character access, lane control, shopping and how you divide the team's jobs. Neither game is a harder difficulty setting for the other. You are learning a different set of decisions.
This comparison covers the standard five-player games, Summoner's Rift and Dota's main map. Custom modes and individual champions or heroes can break the usual rules. Check the current client for patch-specific numbers.
LoL vs Dota 2 at a glance
| What changes | League of Legends | Dota 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Characters | Champions are unlocked individually; free access and rewards let you try a selection | The hero roster is free, although modes and new-player restrictions can limit a particular draft |
| Lane farming | Last-hit enemy minions and manage the wave | Last-hit enemy creeps and deny eligible allied creeps |
| Shopping | Normally return to your base shop to spend gold | Couriers can bring purchases to you |
| Team jobs | Top, jungle, mid, bot and support are the familiar five positions | Farm priority and the match's needs shape core and support jobs |
1. Champion access changes what you can practise
In League, the champions you have unlocked affect what you can select. You can expand that pool over time. Planning a small group you actually want to play is more useful than unlocking whatever happens to look impressive in a highlight video.
Dota starts from a different model: Valve makes its heroes available without individual purchases. That makes trying a different hero less of an unlock decision. It does not mean every hero is selectable in every queue or draft, or that learning the entire roster at once is a good idea. Valve's store page explains its free hero model.
When switching: pick one job and a few characters before worrying about a tier list. If you are learning League, use the champion pool finder to narrow down your preferences and the Blue Essence calculator to plan unlocks. The calculator labels unavailable prices rather than guessing them.
Keep the two currencies in League separate in your head. Blue Essence is an account progression resource. The gold you earn and spend inside a match is a different system. Buying a sword during a match does not permanently add it to your next game's inventory.
2. LoL vs Dota 2 laning rewards different habits
Both games reward securing the final hit on an enemy lane unit. The extra Dota habit is denying: you can finish eligible allied creeps yourself, preventing the opposing player from taking that last hit. Valve's gameplay update history documents the deny system; its numerical rewards have changed across patches.
League does not have the same general allied-minion deny mechanic. Denying an opponent farm usually means controlling where the wave sits, threatening them away from it or making them leave lane. Do not spend your first League game trying to attack your own minions because you saw someone do it in Dota.
When switching: practise farming before trying to win every trade. In Dota, add deny attempts once you can reliably secure your own last hits. In League, watch what your attacks do to the size and position of the wave. Hitting everything constantly is a decision to push, even if you did not mean it that way.
Knowing a combo from your old game is useful. Knowing when the next wave arrives, where your opponent can stand and when you can safely spend gold is what lets you use it.
3. Shopping changes when you leave the lane
League normally asks you to return to the base shop for purchases. Riot's official beginner guide describes the fountain, shop and the gold-and-experience progression within a match. There are character-specific exceptions, so read the champion's kit.
Dota's couriers add another delivery decision. You can receive purchases while remaining on the map, but you still need to manage that delivery. Valve introduced the individual-courier model in the Outlanders update. That historical announcement explains the change; use today's client for courier abilities and timings.
When switching: do not judge your strength only by how much gold you are carrying. Gold becomes combat power when it becomes useful items. In League, look for a sensible window to return and spend. In Dota, remember to use your delivery tools instead of collecting a shopping list you never receive.
Item names are another trap. Similar-looking equipment can solve very different problems. Read what an item actually does before copying a build. Our League items guide is a starting point for learning that side of the shop.
4. Team roles need translating, not copying
League's familiar team arrangement is top, jungle, mid, bot and support. Riot uses those five positions in its own introductory guide. The dedicated jungle position is a particularly noticeable adjustment for players arriving from another MOBA.
Dota players commonly discuss jobs through farm priority, with cores taking more resources and supports working with fewer. That is a useful way to understand the team, but it does not make a Dota position an exact copy of a League lane. Valve also describes heroes as able to fill multiple roles on its store page.
When switching: ask two questions before the match gets busy: which resources are you expected to take, and who are you expected to help? Being a support does not mean doing nothing until a teammate needs healing. Being a carry does not make every nearby resource yours regardless of the game state.
Some skills transfer well: checking the minimap, noticing missing opponents, communicating briefly and choosing fights with a purpose. Character matchups, item answers and movement habits need fresh practice. A high rank in one game gives you experience learning a MOBA, not an automatic rank in the other.
Which should you start with?
Start with the game your friends will actually teach you. A patient teammate who explains one mistake beats ten arguments about which game has more depth.
If you are trying both alone, give each a few learning sessions instead of deciding from one rough match. Pick a manageable character, learn the shop and focus on one position. Judge whether you enjoy making that game's decisions, not whether your first scoreboard looks respectable.
Frequently asked questions
Are LoL and Dota 2 the same game?
No. They share a five-player team format and a base-destruction objective, but their characters, lane mechanics, shopping and team roles differ. Skills can transfer without the rules being interchangeable.
Are all Dota 2 heroes free?
Valve makes the Dota 2 hero roster available without individual hero purchases. Mode rules, the draft and new-player restrictions can still affect what you may select in a particular match.
Can you deny your own minions in League of Legends?
League does not have Dota's general mechanic for last-hitting eligible allied lane creeps. League players usually deny farm by controlling the wave and limiting an opponent's access to enemy minions.
Will my rank transfer between LoL and Dota 2?
No. The games have separate accounts, matchmaking and ranked progression. Your existing MOBA experience can help you learn, but it does not transfer your rank.
