Champion Stats
Low elo players disrespect the Blight stacks. 3 stacks + W-empowered Q deals massive % Max HP magic damage. They think they are tanky, and then they disappear. They also group tightly, making Varus R (which spreads) a team-wiping CC. A smurf lands every Q and R perfectly.
The Range Advantage
Start Q (Piercing Arrow) and look for a level 1 poke trade. Charge Q from behind your minion wave and release it through the enemy ADC when they walk up to CS. At level 2, take W for the Blight passive. Auto the enemy 3 times to stack Blight, then pop it with Q for a massive chunk of % Max HP magic damage. Most bot laners don't respect the Blight detonation at all.
Use your E to slow them, then stack Blight with autos. One Q-pop at 3 stacks is roughly 20% of their HP as magic damage. You don't need to win the auto-attack battle -- you win the ability-burst battle. If your support has any CC, coordinate the lockdown into a full Blight rotation for a guaranteed kill.
Ranking Varus's Skins
'Dark Star Varus' is the most prestigious skin with incredible arrow VFX and a deep space aesthetic. 'High Noon' has the cleanest arrow animations and satisfying gunshot sounds. 'Arctic Ops' gives you the pro-player look with sharp, military-style particles. 'Heartseeker' is for the Valentine's vibes. Avoid 'Project' unless you like the clunky tech feel.
'Dark Star' for the prestige. 'High Noon' for the clean shots. 'Arctic Ops' for the tryhard energy. Varus has the best bow in the game -- pick the one that fires straightest.
When They Ban Varus
If Varus is gone, Ashe is the best 'utility-arrow' pivot with similar R engage potential. Jhin for the long-range poke and sniping fantasy. Kog'Maw if you want the tank-shredding on-hit carry. Nothing matches the Blight-pop burst though.
Varus's Keystone Choice
Lethal Tempo (On-Hit) or Hail of Blades (Lethality Poke). Lethal Tempo is standard for the on-hit carry build -- you stack attack speed and shred with Blight procs. HoB is for the lethality Q-poke build where you auto 3 times fast, then pop with a charged Q. Secondary Sorcery (Manaflow Band + Gathering Storm) for scaling, or Inspiration (Magical Footwear + Biscuits) for lane sustain.
Skill Max Order for Varus
Q max first always for the poke and burst. W second for the on-hit build (% HP scaling). E second if you need the Grievous Wounds and slow more often.
Mastering Varus's Kit
Piercing Arrow. Charge to increase range/damage. Detonates Blight.
Blighted Quiver. Attacks apply Blight. Abilities detonate for % HP damage. Active: Empowers next Q to deal missing HP magic damage.
Chain of Corruption. Root first target. Spreads to nearby enemies if not cleansed. Huge teamfight tool.
The Varus Matchup Sheet
Hard. She outranges you with 650 range vs your 575. Her traps zone you off CS and her headshot poke chunks hard. Play safe early, farm with Q from distance, and look for all-ins at level 6 when your R can lock her down. If she pushes you under tower, she's vulnerable to ganks.
Hard. Draven runs you down with his raw auto damage. Don't trade autos with him -- you lose every time. Poke with Q from max range and save your R for when he all-ins. If you can root him mid-fight, he drops his axes and loses half his DPS.
Skill matchup. She dodges your Q with Tumble and outscales you hard. Your advantage is range and poke -- keep her at distance and stack Blight before she can close the gap. Land R when she Tumbles forward aggressively and she's dead.
Overstepping for CS
Stop missing R! It's a slow projectile but it's huge. Lead the target. If you miss R, you have no self-peel. Also, pop your stacks! Don't just auto attack. Auto x3 -> Ability. Optimizing Blight detonation is the difference between doing 200 damage and 1000 damage.
You have zero mobility. Save your R for self-peel. If the assassin jumps you, R them and run. Use your E to slow the chase. You're a sniper—stay at the back and aim well. Arrows ready.
When Kiting Won't Save You
Dodge Yasuo or Samira. Windwall blocks your Q, E, and R. You are completely useless into them. Also dodge Olaf -- he presses R and ignores your Chain of Corruption entirely, then runs you down with no counterplay.
The Kiting Dance
In teamfights, position at max range and let your frontline engage first. Use R to catch someone out of position or to peel an assassin diving you. If you're on lethality, charge Q from fog of war and snipe before the fight even starts. If you're on-hit, stand back, stack Rageblade, and melt the nearest target. Use E to reduce healing on drain tanks -- the built-in Grievous Wounds is free value against Aatrox, Sylas, or any lifesteal-heavy carry.
You have zero mobility. That's the tradeoff for your insane damage. Save your R for self-peel if an assassin is on your team's radar. If Zed or Talon jumps you, R them point-blank and walk away while they're rooted. Your E slow buys you extra distance. Stay at the back, aim well, and let the arrows fly.
The Late Game Build
On-Hit Varus: Blade of the Ruined King -> Guinsoo's Rageblade -> Terminus. You shred tanks in seconds with the on-hit stacking and Blight procs. This is the standard carry build for most games.
AP Varus: Nashor's Tooth -> Riftmaker -> Rabadon's Deathcap. Your W passive deals % Max HP per 100 AP. With full build, 3 stacks + W-empowered Q deals absurd magic damage. You literally delete tanks who think they're safe. This build is situational but devastating when the enemy team stacks HP.
Lethality Varus: Youmuu's -> Opportunity -> Serylda's Grudge. Pure Q-poke from fog of war. You charge Q and snipe people for half their HP bar. Great for siege comps but falls off if the enemy has tanks.
When Varus Comes Online
Level 1-3 is your poke window -- charge Q through the wave and chunk the enemy ADC. Level 6 is a massive spike because Chain of Corruption gives you kill pressure and self-peel you didn't have before. Your first completed item (BORK for on-hit, Youmuu's for lethality) is when you start actually carrying fights.
AP Varus scales infinitely into late game vs tanky comps. On-hit spikes hardest at 2 items (BORK + Rageblade). Lethality is strongest mid-game when enemies don't have armor yet. If you're hitting your Qs consistently, you're always relevant.
The Outplay Kite
Sniping them under tower with a fully charged Q when they think they're safe at 200 HP. The arrow travels so far they don't even see it coming. Type 'Calculated' when the limit-test works. Landing a 5-man R in a teamfight and watching the chains spread to everyone is peak Varus gameplay -- it's basically a Morgana Q that hits the whole team.
