If you’ve played League of Legends before and enjoyed the game but for whatever reason now you’re looking for something new to play then you’ll be happy to know you have a number of options in the MOBA genre.
Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Valve Corporation, Half Life, Team Fortress and Portal, for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux.
DOTA 2 is easily the biggest competitor to League of Legends and just like League of Legends it is developing into one of the largest, if not the largest, eSport game in the world consistently seeing larger championship prize pools when compared to LoL.
It’s very similar to LoL in that it’s free to play but then uses in game transcations to generate revenue with new skins that players can buy etc. If you like mastering different champions / class types then LoL will be a more rewarding experience, but if you like the feeling of complete mastery then DotA allows players more mechanics and build/skill paths to further your mastery.
The main difference between League of Legends and DOTA 2 is the speed of the gameplay. League of Legends is a fast paced game compared to the slower gameplay of DOTA 2. This encourages more 1v1’s and less roaming than in League of Legends and also leads to some unique champion abilities. The combat in DOTA 2 lasts longer than League of Legends and the in game voice chat makes communication between players much easier than on League of Legends.
Heroes of the Storm is made by Blizzard, who also created Word of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Diablo & Starcraft, and provides a MOBA game using the characters from these games which many players have grown to love.
Once again it’s free to play and revolves around 5 v 5 battles in battle arenas from the Blizzard universe. Again, in game and optional purchases are where Blizzard money from it’s player base. Games generally last between 15 – 20 minutes.
The major difference is that HotS doesn’t have an inventory system nor does it have gold, the entire game focuses on EXP gain, which allows you to purchase talents and have more than the standard QWER skills. Instead of buying potions, they’re provided at healing fountains. Instead of buying wards you can unlock a talent to provide you with drones which act as wards.
The map has alot of different smaller game modes which gives the players more objectives rather than just destroying the opponents core. This is something many players highlight as one of the biggest benefits of HotS.
Smite is a third-person multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Hi-Rez Studios for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Third person camera views mean it’s very similar to the view that you’d have when playing a character on World of Warcraft.
In Smite, players control a god, goddess, or other mythological figure and take part in arena combat, using abilities and team tactics against other player-controlled gods and non-player-controlled minions.
Currently, players can choose between 79 gods and immortals from eight different pantheons: Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Hindu, Japanese, Mayan, Norse and Roman.
Smite offers numerous game modes and rather than the typical 5 v 5 it also ofers 1 v 1, random god selection and domination. Like all the others so far the game is free to play and players can spend gems on in game skins and unlocking new gods.
Nosgoth gameplay focuses on melee Vampire characters versus the ranged Human characters and piggybacks off the popularity of gamers and zombies. Nosgoth is an asymmetrical online multiplayer third-person shooter.
Nosgoth has two game moders: Deathmatch in which The Vampires and Humans fight against each other to get a higher kill count or reach a killcount threshold. If the time runs out the team with the higher kills wins. The second gamemode is Flashpoint: which is a traditional domination mode that provide the human team with the objective of capturing a series of control points in the map.
Each capture adds another capture point and provides extended time on the clock. Vampies win if they match time runs out.
Strife is a game that is the most unique when compared to League of Legends. As MOBA the differences in strife are everywhere and include a two lane map, huge jungle and unique approach to heroes that make them suitable for every role.
This provides players with the ability to play and master a single character while playing in a different role for every game if you wish.
In Strife players will be part of two teams against each other and start at either corners of the map. The goal of the game is to destroy the central structure of the opposite based called the Crux.
Every hero has four abilities and similar to other games can be upgraded and acquired as the hero gains experience.
